Last 2 Weeks in Cape Town

Sorry for the delay in updates, I have been slacking.
I can't believe I have less than two weeks left in Cape Town. I am trying to savor every minute, take advantage of the rare good weather, and make the last days count.

Here is a preview of how I am spending my last days here:

  • Shark cage diving
  • Taking a weekend trip to Durban
  • Doing my last souvenir shopping
  • Eating at all my favorite places
  • Enjoying the company of my friends
  • Staring at Table Mountain
  • "Studying" for my last 2 finals
Can't believe the end is almost here, it is scary!

Mitchell's Plain

On May 8th our security guard Andrew planned an entire day for our house and some of our friends to come to his township, meet his friends and neighbours, and interact with the community. It was one of the most meaningful and fun days I have had all semester, and it was truly an unbelievable and unique experience. Andrew spent so much time and energy making sure the day was perfect, and it truly went off without a hitch.

Our transport arrived at 8: 30 am to take us to Mitchell’s Plain, about a twenty minute drive to the northern suburbs of Cape Town. A massive two-course breakfast awaited us upon our arrival, and we all realized we would be eating very well and very excessively that day.

the amazing breakfast

After breakfast, we went to the center of town, and walked around (with police escorts, Andrew is always about our safety) to get a feel for what the town was like. It was huge and bustling with tons of vendors and stores.

From there, we headed to the main event of the day. We arrived at a park / square place where there were about a hundred community members and kids awaiting us. We were given face paint and bubbles to play with the kids, the boys played in soccer games, there was singing and dancing, and talking and interacting. We even got to eat potjiekoss, a famous South African stew-like dish made in huge pots over fires.

After that, we met with a local woman on the community council who spoke about the people’s struggle to have ownership of their land, the problems in the community, and the hopes for the future. It was very interesting to hear these issues firsthand.

We then proceeded to Andrew’s mother-in-law’s house for a huge braai (South African barbecue.) We hung out, danced, drank and ate some of the most delicious food I have ever had.

To end the night, we headed to the “Long Street” of the northern suburbs, and partied at a club with Andrew and his friends. We didn’t end up getting home until 3:30 and some people didn’t get back until after 5:00 a.m!

It was truly a great day, we all had so much fun and were so appreciative for the opportunity. We even had an American barbecue for Andrew and his friends to try and show our gratitude for all that they did for us. I feel like this description doesn’t even do the day justice, it was THAT amazing!!!
